Today, we remember one of the strongest tornadoes ever recorded in Canada: Edmonton's Black Friday tornado of 1987.
This incredibly violent tornado touched down at 2:55pm to the south of Edmonton and it tracked north for a little over an hour, carving a 30.8km path of death and destruction through Eastern Edmonton before it dissipated at 4:00pm.
At its greatest strength, the tornado was an F4, with staggering wind speeds of 418km/h that were strong enough to completely level industrial buildings and throw multiple oil tanks. Sadly, the tornado also destroyed many homes on its path across the city, which resulted in upwards of 600 injuries and 27 deaths, many of which occurred when the tornado tore through the Evergreen Mobile Home Park.
In total, the Black Friday tornado caused over $300 million in damage. However, it also led to some major changes, such as the implementation of a provincial public warning system and the introduction of a state-of-the-art weather radar network across the country.
What do you remember from this horrific day?
