How Plasma UV Sun-Simulation Works
Gas excitation: Radio frequency (RF) or microwave energy turns gas mixtures (like argon, sulfur, or metal halides) into a glowing plasma state.
Full spectrum: Unlike standard LEDs or basic fluorescents, they emit a balanced spectrum including visible light, UVA, and UVB rays similar to real sunlight.
No internal electrodes: Because they are electrodeless, they avoid standard wear-and-tear component degradation, leading to a long operational lifespan.

HOW SOLAR PANELS WORK EVEN OR EVEN WORK
Solar panels do not extract physical materials from the sun; instead, they absorb photons (light particles) and solar radiation (heat and light energy) to generate electricity.
How Sunlight Becomes Power
Photons: Tiny packets of energy in sunlight hit the silicon solar cells.
Electrons: The energy from the photons knocks electrons loose from the silicon atoms inside the panel.
Electric Current: Metal conductive wires catch these moving electrons and turn them into a flow of electricity (direct current, or DC power).
The Role of Silicon

No Extraction: The panel's materials (like silicon, silver, and copper) are built into it permanently and do not get used up or pulled from the sun.

Using a plasma bulb to charge a solar panel is extremely inefficient, producing negligible power.
While solar panels can technically generate a tiny electrical current from artificial light via the photovoltaic effect, plasma globes emit very low light intensity and high thermal/electrical loss, making them practically useless as an energy source.
How Light and Solar Panels Interact
Photons: Solar cells need light particles (photons) to hit the photovoltaic material to knock electrons loose.
Spectrum: Standard solar cells prefer visible light wavelengths, which LED or specialized testing lights provide better than heat-heavy incandescent or decorative plasma lamps.
Distance: Light power drops quickly over distance; an artificial lamp must be pressed almost directly against a panel to yield measurable metrics.
Practical Reality
Output: A plasma globe (such as a Discovery Plasma Globe Lamp) consumes several watts of electricity from a wall plug or batteries but returns a fraction of a milliwatt if pointed at a small solar cell.
Energy Loop: Using a plasma bulb to power a solar panel creates a massive net loss of energy, as it takes far more grid power to run the globe than the solar panel could ever recapture.
Plasma + Northern Lights
Xenon arc lamps are the absolute best choice to replicate the sun because they match the natural solar spectrum and intensity (around 6000K). For alternative or budget needs, metal halide lamps and high-intensity full-spectrum LEDs are also used.
Professional and Lab Light Sources
Xenon Arc Lamps: Provide the closest spectral match to natural sunlight and high irradiance used in standard solar simulators, though they are expensive and run hot.
Metal Halide Lamps: Offer a stable, efficient spectrum that mimics solar radiation well for larger testing areas at a lower cost than xenon systems.
DIY and Testing Light Sources
Full-Spectrum LEDs: Energy-efficient and long-lasting, though you must select high-output, multi-wavelength LED arrays to cover both the visible and infrared spectrums required by silicon cells.
Halogen / Tungsten Bulbs: Inexpensive alternatives that emit infrared light, but they waste a massive amount of energy as heat and have a poor spectral match compared to the sun.

Solar panels can generate a tiny amount of electricity from artificial lights, but it is extremely inefficient and causes a major net energy loss.

Why Artificial Light Fails
