A PROJECT
Stargate, or the Stargate Project, is a massive public-private artificial intelligence (AI) joint venture. Announced in January 2025, the project involves a projected $500 billion investment led by OpenAI, SoftBank, Oracle, and MGX to build out the largest AI supercomputing and data center infrastructure in US history.
The initiative aims to rapidly scale up the computational power required to train next-generation AI models. Key partners like NVIDIA are supplying the advanced GPUs (such as the GB200 chips), while sites are being constructed across the country designed to eventually deliver gigawatts of power capacity.
Key Details & Sites
Flagship Location: The most advanced facility is located in Abilene, Texas, where multiple buildings are already operational and equipped with advanced GPUs.
Other Sites: Additional active development sites are underway across multiple states, including locations in New Mexico, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, and two other campuses in Texas.
Leadership: SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son serves as the chairman of the venture, while OpenAI handles operational responsibilities.
Project Goals
Infrastructure Supremacy: The buildout is designed to secure United States leadership in the global AI race.
Economic Impact: The four-year construction timeline expects to create hundreds of thousands of jobs and support the re-industrialization of the country.
