MIXED REVIEWS ON VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS & WILDFIRES
While volcanic eruptions and severe wildfires can temporarily offset global heating by reflecting sunlight away from the Earth, they do not combat climate change. In fact, they ultimately exacerbate it. These natural events release massive volumes of carbon dioxide, destroy carbon-absorbing forests, and warm the upper atmosphere.
The Temporary "Cooling" Effect
Both explosive volcanic eruptions and extreme, high-altitude wildfires can inject particles into the stratosphere.
Volcanoes: Release large quantities of sulfur dioxide, which reacts with water to form sulfate aerosols. These highly reflective droplets reflect sunlight back into space, temporarily cooling the Earth's lower atmosphere.
Wildfires: Propel smoke and dark carbon particles into the stratosphere.
Research shows these natural events offset about 20% of global heating over recent years. However, this cooling is short-lived, usually lasting only a year or two before the particles settle.
Why They Do Not Combat Climate Change
Despite this temporary offset, neither wildfires nor volcanic eruptions act as a solution to climate change. The negative impacts far outweigh the cooling:
Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Fires and volcanoes release massive amounts of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which adds to the long-term warming trend.
Destruction of Carbon Sinks: Wildfires destroy millions of hectares of forests that would otherwise absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Warming the Stratosphere: Unlike volcanoes, wildfire smoke absorbs strong sunlight, causing localized warming in the upper atmosphere rather than cooling the planet.
The Vicious Cycle
Instead of fighting climate change, wildfires and volcanic eruptions form a dangerous feedback loop. Climate change creates hotter, drier conditions that make forests more susceptible to frequent and intense wildfires. When these fires burn, they release carbon and other pollutants—such as black carbon, which accelerates the melting of ice and snow—further driving up temperatures.
