At full capacity, Lake Mead holds about 28.9 million acre-feet (roughly 9.4 trillion gallons or 36 trillion liters) of water at a maximum surface elevation of 1,229 feet above sea level. Due to long-term drought, it currently sits at roughly 30% to 35% of its total capacity.

While 36 trillion liters is not a single specific operational milestone, global water desalination capacity is massive. Worldwide plants produce tens of billions of cubic meters (trillions of liters) of fresh water each year to offset severe water shortages. For scale, large regional efforts or global annual outputs regularly approach or exceed these vast volumes. 

Understanding Large-Scale Desalination

Global Output: Worldwide production capacity spans immense volumes, with global output scaling up yearly as arid regions turn to the ocean for survival. 

Mega-Facilities: Plants like Israel's Sorek plant or massive installations in Qatar and Saudi Arabia pump out hundreds of millions of liters of clean water daily using reverse osmosis. 

Core Challenges: High energy consumption and salty waste byproduct (brine disposal) remain major hurdles, though modern membranes grow more efficient.
