The process to become the head of the UN involves several key steps:
1. Get Nominated by a Country
You cannot apply on your own.

2. Present Your Vision
Nominated candidates participate in public, televised or webcast interviews called interactive dialogues.
You share your plans and answer questions from UN member countries and civil society.
3. Win the Security Council Vote
The 15-member UN Security Council holds private straw polls to test support for each candidate.
You must get at least nine votes of encouragement.
Crucial rule: None of the five permanent veto-wielding members (the US, Russia, China, the UK, and France) can vote against you. A single veto from any of these five countries ends your run.
4. Get Appointed by the General Assembly
If the Security Council agrees on a single candidate, it sends a formal recommendation to the full UN General Assembly.
