Making hydrogen with electricity gets a boost

Method created by University of Alberta scientists could lead to cheaper nitrogen fertilizer production

WINNIPEG — Hydrogen is the most common element on the universe.

But it isn’t easy to make.

Most of the hydrogen on earth is produced with steam reforming, a process that requires high temperature steam of 700 to 1,000 Celsius.
That hydrogen is then used for muliple uses, including the production of nitrogen fertilizer.
“Typically, ammonia is produced using natural gas. You take natural gas through a process called steam-methane reforming, essentially to get to the hydrogen,” said Mike Reese, renewable energy director at the University of Minnesota’s West Central Research and Outreach Center.
“That’s performed (at) world-scale plants.”

For years, scientists and innovators have tried to disrupt steam-reforming with electrolyzers, a device that uses two electrodes to split water into hydrogen and oxygen.

But the same obstacle always got in their way.

It requires an immense amount of electricity to produce hydrogen with an electrolyzer. That made it more costly than steam reforming, unless the price of electricity was extremely cheap.

However, University of Alberta scientists may have solved this problem. From 2021 to 2024, they looked for ways to improve electrolyzers and eventually invented a ‘glue’ that makes the devices more efficient.

The glue stabilized the electrodes in the electrolyzer and sped up the process. The conductive glue, meaning it conducts electricity, reduced energy waste and cut the cost of producing hydrogen.

“We are fiscally competing with steam reforming (as) a way to make hydrogen,” said Steve Bergens, a University of Alberta chemistry professor.
Testing showed that the innovation worked, as it improved the efficiency of electrolyzers.

“This is not simply a better catalyst…. We believe our method will drastically drop the cost to make green hydrogen for any commercial partner,” Bergens said in a University of Alberta report.

Partnership with Canadian company

Bergens and his team began looking for a company to bring this innovation to market. They quickly found Cipher Neutron, a Toronto firm developing technology to produce hydrogen.

Gurjant Randhawa, a mechanical engineer, is the CEO of Cipher Neutron and an expert in electrolyzers and fuel cells.

He recognized that Bergens had something unique and Cipher Neutron now holds the license for the efficient electrolyzers.

Trials have shown that the U of Alberta technology can significantly reduce the operating cost of making hydrogen.

“We are saving 54 cents per kg of hydrogen being produced,” Randhawa said, assuming an electricity price of 10 cents per kw/h.

If a manufacturer is producing five tonnes of hydrogen per day with an electrolyzer, that’s a cost saving of more than $5,000 per day.
Cipher Neutron now has a unique and possibly disruptive technology, but the global fertilizer industry is big business.

Convincing established players to switch to “green” fertilizer won’t be easy, but the U.S.-Israel war against Iran is providing an opportunity.
The war and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz has interrupted supply chains and restricted fertilizer supplies to Australia and southeast Asia.
“India is starving (for) ammonia,” Randhawa said.
“That (the war) is maybe the reason we’re getting double the inquiries that we were seeing two months ago.”

Some innovators and university researchers have focused on small scale production of ‘green’ fertilizer, including a Canadian company called FuelPositive.

Cipher Neutron is taking a different approach. It is working on electrolyzers that can produce a massive amount of hydrogen.

“In the fertilizer industry, it has to be (big),” Randhawa said.

“With this (U of Alberta) technology in our portfolio, we’ve been chased by some big corporations…. And there are plans to work with them to implement this technology at scale.”
