Who Qualifies for Tariff Refunds
Importers of Record: Only businesses that formally paid the IEEPA tariffs and cleared customs directly can claim refunds through U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
Canadian & Foreign Exporters: Canadian or international small businesses that acted as the official importer of record and directly paid those U.S. tariffs between February 2025 and February 2026 may be eligible to recover funds.
Exclusions: Sectoral tariffs (such as those on steel, aluminum, autos, and softwood lumber) remain active and are not part of this refund process.
Consumer Rebate Status
No Direct Checks: There are no approved federal stimulus checks or direct "tariff dividend" payouts for consumers.
Legislative Proposals: Congressional proposals like the American Consumer Tariff Rebate Act have been introduced to route money back to taxpayers, but none have been enacted into law.
Corporate Actions: Major retailers and corporate importers receiving billions in refunds have generally stated the money will go toward absorbing operating costs or lowering future prices rather than cash rebates.
