Thermonuclear weapons rely on a two-stage Teller-Ulam configuration where a fission primary triggers a fusion secondary via radiation implosion.
Primary Stage (Trigger)
Fission Core (Pit):Uses chemical explosives to compress sub-critical fuel (pit) to critical mass -- [Union of Concerned Scientists].
Boosting Gas: Contains a mixture of deuterium and tritium gas to boost fission efficiency through added neutrons.
High Explosives: Precision chemical lenses (such as HMX or TATB) compress the pit.
Secondary Stage (Fusion)
Thermonuclear Fuel: Primarily lithium-6 deuteride, which yields tritium upon absorbing neutrons.
Fissile Spark Plug: A central rod or core of uranium-235 or plutonium-239 that compresses and fissions to create extreme interior heat and pressure.
Pusher / Tamper: A heavy outer casing (often uranium-238) that holds the fusion fuel in place and undergoes fast fission from the high-energy fusion neutrons.
Channeling Material: Radiation case and polystyrene foam that convert primary X-rays into a compression plasma.

An atomic bomb cannot be completely free of radioactive fallout, but an air burst detonation produces significantly less local fallout than a surface detonation.
Why Complete "Zero Fallout" is Impossible
Fission products: Standard nuclear weapons rely on splitting atoms (fission), which creates inherently radioactive byproducts.
Neutron activation: Even a hypothetical "clean" fusion device releases high-energy neutrons that strike surrounding air and soil, transmuting stable isotopes into radioactive ones. As explained in Wikipedia, “when they collide with other nuclei in the surrounding material, the neutrons transmute those nuclei into other isotopes, altering their stability and making them radioactive.”
How to Reduce Fallout: Air Bursts
Altitude matters: Detonating a weapon high in the air (typically more than 500 meters or 1,600 feet above the ground) prevents the fireball from touching the earth.
Less debris: Because the fireball does not touch the ground, it vaporizes very little heavy soil or rock to loft into the atmosphere.
Global vs. Local: As noted by The MIT Press Reader, “because the Hiroshima blast was an air burst, radioactive fission materials were better dispersed in the atmosphere, and the most dangerous ones did not fall back to Earth attached to heavy ground debris.” Instead of a heavy, localized layer of lethal fallout near the target, the lighter particles disperse widely into the upper atmosphere, lowering immediate local contamination at the cost of global trace increases.

A "non-fallout hydrogen bomb" typically refers to either a pure fusion weapon (a nuclear device) or a non-nuclear thermobaric hydrogen weapon that uses chemical reactions rather than radioactive atoms.
1. Pure Fusion Weapons (Nuclear, but No Fallout)
Traditional hydrogen (thermonuclear) bombs use a fission (uranium or plutonium) "primary" bomb to trigger a fusion "secondary" reaction. The final stage of these multi-stage weapons usually creates massive amounts of radioactive fission fallout.
The Concept: Scientists have long researched pure fusion weapons, which would use high temperatures and pressures to start a fusion reaction (deuterium and tritium) without needing a uranium or plutonium trigger.
Fallout Level: “These weapons do not create the highly radioactive byproducts made by fission-type weapons.”
Current Status: They do exist practically. No one has used a functional, net-yield weapon that can ignite fusion without a fission spark outside small testing.
2. Non-Nuclear Hydrogen Storage Bombs (Chemical)
Recent military and scientific research has explored weapons that use stored hydrogen gas for massive conventional blasts without any nuclear materials.
The Concept: Developed using solid-state hydrogen storage materials like magnesium hydride powder, these devices release large amounts of hydrogen gas when triggered by conventional explosives.
The Blast: “The device uses a magnesium-based solid-state hydrogen storage material... releasing hydrogen gas that ignited into a sustained inferno.” -- as noted by SCMP.
Fallout Level: Zero radioactive fallout, as it relies purely on a chemical fuel-air or thermal explosion rather than nuclear fission or fusion.
